247 Years in Prison?!?

Why is it when somebody has killed a bunch of people, the judge will sentence them to some ridiculous ass amount of time like 247 years in prison? Why not just call that shit life in prison? That nigga ain't gonna be alive in 2256! I mean, I know some judges do that but they should really make that shit universal...
